Materials & Technology is about how buildings are made, and how that is changing. Sustainable architecture is no longer a matter of adding solar panels to a finished design; it starts with the structure and the materials, and with the decision whether to build new at all. This section follows the materials and methods behind that shift, with the numbers that show what works.
Mass timber buildings — frames of cross-laminated timber and glulam that hold carbon in their structure — are rising higher and appearing in more building codes. Low-carbon concrete, reused steel and bio-based insulation are changing specifications. Retrofit and reuse, which keep the carbon already spent on an existing structure, are often the most sustainable building choice of all.
Technology is changing the drawing board as much as the building site. We cover AI in architecture and the computational tools that generate and test design options, 3D-printed houses and other new construction methods, and the digital fabrication that lets architects build what once could only be drawn. Each story separates what is proven from what is promised, including the questions of authorship, labour and quality these tools raise, and links to the research, the manufacturers and the built projects.
For students and practitioners the aim is practical: what a material is, how it performs, what it costs and where it has been used well. Where a claim about carbon or cost comes from a manufacturer, the story says so and looks for independent data. Start with the sustainable building materials and technology stories below.
