Architecture competitions are where many of the most important buildings begin — and where the profession argues most openly about what architecture should be. The Journal follows them from the open call to the jury's decision: the brief, the shortlist, the winning entry and the runners-up, and the questions each result raises.
For each major competition we publish the architecture competition results with the finalists side by side: who entered, what each team proposed, who sat on the jury and why they chose the winner. Then we read the winning scheme as critics and ask whether the brief got the building it needed. Sometimes the story continues after the announcement — a public backlash, a reversed decision, a client who quietly changes course — and we follow that too.
The section covers international design competitions for museums, libraries, public spaces and housing, alongside the ideas competitions and student architecture competitions where new voices often appear first. We note deadlines and eligibility where they matter, but our focus is on what the entries say about architecture's priorities: public space, reuse, climate, and who a building is for. Finalists are named as the organiser publishes them, and every story links to the official results.
If you are preparing an entry, read the winners for what juries reward: a clear idea, a legible plan and a convincing answer to the site — and read the runners-up for the ideas that were nearly chosen, often the most daring of all. Start with the architecture competition winners of 2026 below.
