Retrofuturism
My proposed design for an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) investigates the evolution of the modern home by combining present architectural trends with the futuristic design aspects of the Monsanto House of the Future. Bold curves and smooth edges characterized the Monsanto House, which was designed as a prototype of futuristic living in the middle of the 20th century. On the other hand, the typically sleek design and clean lines of today's modern dwellings, especially ADUs, set them apart. My concept, named "Retrofuturism," contrasts the crisp, geometric forms of modern architecture with the organic, flowing shapes of the Monsanto House by fusing these two architectural philosophies. The 720 sq ft unit is carved into a mountain and features a kitchen, bedroom, living room, outdoor patio, and even a private office. This combination honors the imaginative concepts of the past while simultaneously reflecting the pragmatic and aesthetic sensitivities of modern life.
